In nowaday’s fast-developing world of commercial development, various temporary exhibition halls have been produced. However, these exhibition halls became construction waste after the exhibition, and it was difficult to clean up properly. The materials could not be recycled and reused, causing a lot of unnecessary waste, pollution and emission problems.

In the 2019 Shanghai International Furniture Fair, Rooi Design and Research created an outdoor independent exhibition hall specifically for furniture exhibitors. The architect abandoned the cool shape to attract people’s attention. Instead, they used materials more sincerely and boldly exposed the rough texture of the wood to express the authenticity of the materials and the pure functionality of the space. And after the end of the project, a sustainable reuse solution for the abandoned exhibition hall was realized.
The main structure of the building adopts a wood-steel structure hybrid system, and the roof adopts a hyperboloid design (positive and negative arch beam steel structure). The whole building space is open and clean, without a column. The architect believes that leaving the complexity to the process of design and construction will bring a fresh and comfortable visual effect to the public, while bringing zero load to the city. During the exhibition, this project brings a vibrant center point to the empty external venue. It is not only a furniture exhibition hall, but also a place for visitors to enjoy the cool, relax and watch.

The furniture in the exhibition hall echoes the plywood
The facade of the building uses two different forms of cubes, and the four facades have become windows for displaying furniture. Visitors can clearly watch the furniture display from different directions, different floors and other angles. In addition, the transparent façade can capture enough sunlight, while the 1.22m deep window prevents direct sunlight, bringing a comfortable visual effect to the visitors.

In the summer of 2020, the architect recovered the entire exhibition building and created 410 sets of tables and chairs for the nearby rural communities in the most economical way. Considering that rural communities usually have close interpersonal relationships, the architect designed these hexagonal furniture based on the size of the panels and the needs of users. Each piece of 1.22m x 1.22m recycled plywood can be processed into a hexagonal table or 3 stools and is easy to install. Finally, the village committee distributes them to the needy and community service centers. In use, people naturally combine tables and chairs in different forms, which greatly increases the interaction and interest, and helps enrich community activities.

Affected by the concept of sustainable development, variability becomes a factor to be considered at the beginning of the construction process, and it is applicable before and after construction. The design, construction and use of buildings are all activities that involve humans’ continuous participation in time, during which the conditions of human existence change in their material and spiritual environment. Design is not accomplished overnight. It is a process, not a superposition of quantities, but a creative and variable production practice.
The process of construction is the continuous practice and development of human experience. This development is unfinished and can be reproduced. However, this change in the time dimension needs to be recorded and explained through the media, and images are undoubtedly the best choice.

As a medium and tool, architectural images continues the life of architecture and also enhances the multiple values of architecture at a broader level. The expression of a good building is not only the design plan, but also the continuity and recyclability after construction. The reuse of the materials considered by the architect can be visually displayed in front of the public through the recording of the photographic medium, making the whole design more complete and meaningful for sustainable development. The process of construction is the spark of collision between design and reality, an archive of ideas and skills, and an image story brought to the public by photographers after discovering and recreating.
